The story
Inspired by Thamudic inscriptions carved into desert rock. "Thamudic" is the name nineteenth-century scholars gave to the many inscriptions in Ancient North Arabian alphabets, after the ancient Arab tribe of Thamud; many have yet to be properly studied. They are found across a vast area from southern Syria to Yemen.
About 8.5 km east of Wadi Rum, at Disi, an Italian excavation uncovered an early Nabataean site occupied before the Nabataeans moved to the rose-red city of Petra. Throughout the valley lie rock slabs inscribed in early Thamudic, recording the names of travellers who passed through centuries ago. These inscriptions date to approximately 853 BC.
